gallery.sora. is pleased to announce the debut exhibition in Japan of Los Angeles based artist, Violet Hopkins. A graduate of California Institute of the Arts (MFA), Hopkins has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally. A selection of recent exhibitions includes Balice Hertling, Paris (2007), Stuart Shave/Modern Art, London (2006) and The Rubell Family Collection, Miami (2006). In 2007, Hopkins was a participant in the Art Production Fund Giverny Residency Program, Giverny, France.

Violet Hopkins explores the semantics of color; in works on paper, decidedly large or small in scale, Hopkins draws and paints natural forms. These forms, sometimes clearly representational, oftentimes obliquely abstract, are of interest first as manifestations and subsequently as representations of an apparently meaningful assignment and distribution of color. In past exhibitions, Hopkins has pictured a variety of landscapes and figures whose visual form serves as a reference to both the logic and process of creation as well as a subsequently acquired function and meaning.

For the present exhibition, Hopkins will focus on the eye, tears and reflection. Self-reflexive and literally outward-looking, Hopkins new works reference the mediated image -specifically the photographic - and delight in an optical play of the reflected and the semantic ambiguity of the tear. In addition to a pair of large-scale works on paper, Hopkins will present in slide format a series of images in chromatic sequence. Central to this new body of work - and to Hopkins work in general - is a delight in the easily accessible yet equally powerful and open phenomenon of looking; a consideration of images and -via extension- the world through color.
