Alec SOTH

Alec Soth was born in 1969 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he is currently based. He graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxsville, New York in 1992. While embarking on road trips throughout the American Midwest, Soth takes photographs of the people, lifestyles, and scenery in the suburbs and regional communities. Soth’s works capture the intimate and elusive lives of his subjects along with the at times desolate landscapes in iconic, large-format color photographs. He is highly acclaimed internationally for his quiet lyricism and documentary approach.
In addition to taking part in the 2004 Whitney Biennial and the São Paulo Art Biennial, he garnered widespread attention for his first and preeminent photo book “Sleeping by the Mississippi” (2004). He subsequently developed a diverse range of other series, including “Niagara” (2006), “Dog Days, Bogotá” (2007), “Broken Manual” (2010), “Songbook” (2015), “I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating” (2019), “A Pound of Pictures” (2022), and “Advice for Young Artists” (2024). Soth continues to explore new possibilities in photographic expression.
Soth’s solo exhibitions include “Alec Soth: A Room of Rooms”, Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (2024), “Gathered Leaves”, Museum of Modern Art, Hayama; Kanagawa (2020), “Gathered Leaves: Photographs by Alec Soth”, Media Space, London (2015), “From Here to There: Alec Soth’s America”, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2010), and “L’espace entre nous, Jeu de Paume, Paris (2008). He has received the PhotoVision Award (2008), the Guggenheim Fellowship (2013), and the Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) (2021). Soth’s works are collected in the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA); Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Walker Art Center (Minneapolis); and the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). In 2024, he became a nominee of Magnum Photos in 2004 before becoming a full member in 2008. In 2008, he opened a small arts institution called Little Brown Mushroom, which publishes books and holds workshops, among other things.
