1959年生於青森縣弘前市，1987年畢業於愛知縣立藝術大學大學院碩士課程。1988年前往德國杜塞道夫藝術學院就讀，畢業後以科隆作為據點，從事繪畫及雕塑作品的創作與發表。早在尚未將藝術家定為人生志業的青少年時期，奈良便忠於自身的感性從事著攝影。當時累積下來的作品為數眾多，由2000年代起開始對外發表。曾參與「Bye Bye Kitty!!!: Between Heaven and Hell in Contemporary Japanese Art（Bye Bye Kitty!!! 日本當代藝術的天堂與地獄之間）」（Japan Society，紐約，2011年）、「Rites de Passage」（Schunk Glaspaleis，海爾倫，2009年）、「Non-sect Radical Contemporary Photography III（無派別激進分子 當代的攝影III）」（橫濱美術館，神奈川，2004年）等在日本國內外所舉行的聯展。他的目光落在那些容易被忽略的景緻及生命價值，以攝影的形式捕捉了形形色色的風土民情、音樂、生命、歷史、景緻、人群等，近年來其評價日益高升。主要攝影個展包括「Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone―Take your time, it won’t be long now」Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film（2018年）、「Will the Circle Be Unbroken」代官山Hillside Plaza（2017年）等。主要攝影集有《奈良美智寫真帖 2003-2012》（講談社出版，2012年）、《the good, the bad, the average … and unique》（Little More出版，2003年）等。作品主要收藏於Neues Museum Nürnberg（纽伦堡）等機構。
