Yann Gerstberger

Yann Gerstberger (Cagnes sur Mer, FR, 1983) currently lives and works in Mexico City. He studied painting and sculpture at École des Beaux Arts de Marseille and received his Master’s degree in 2007. Since then he has created a body of work in which uncontinuous, innocent, tropical and ancient motifs constitute a visual vocabulary mixed between the representational and abstract. His work is characterized by a profusion of exuberant colors and shapes: nocturnal herbariums, biomorphic aquatic plants, dazzling textile patterns, speeding birds, ornamental graffiti flowers, abstract shell songs. Rugged and colorful, the tapestries, paintings and murals are a sublime amalgamation of the extensive archive of imagery culled by the artist from a wide variety of sources, including the internet, his personal life experiences and dreams, in an effort to engage the material world with its imaginary counterpart.
Yann Gerstberger had institutional exhibitions at Museo Tamayo, Mexico City; MO.CO., Montpellier; Museo MATE, Lima; Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Queretaro; Consortium, Dijon; Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris; Power Station of Art, Shanghai; Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Recent projects include NGV Triennale, Ian Potter Centre, Melbourne. Recent solo projects include: Zugunruhe, Gisela Capitain, Cologne; ICE NEWS AND FREEWAY FETISHES, OMR, Mexico.
His works are held in public collections such as Collection Mario Testino, Lima, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Pérez Art Museum Miami, Fond national d’art contemporain, Paris, Alumnos 47, Mexico City and Fundación Calosa, Irapuato, among others.
