Tomoki Imai “another time”

Dates: Jul 10 – 31, 2004

Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to announce the debut gallery exhibition of artist Tomoki Imai. Imai has participated in exhibitions including Void, Yokohama Portside Gallery, 2003, and Blackout, organized by the Japan Foundation and traveling to Tokyo, Paris and Rome, 2002-2003. The artist’s monograph, In the middle of the day, was published by Seigensya Art Publishing in 2001.

Two points serve as the basis for this exhibition: seeing and sensitivity. Although the exhibited photographs were shot without any other thoughts in mind, I tried to follow this methodology:

– Listen to the sounds of vines made when they wrap around a tree’s trunk
– See the object deep within my eyes.
– Discover hidden moments.
– Be aware of the presence of subtle excess.

Anything could have been the subject of these photographs; having imagined the avenue when shooting the forest, interiors and the forest in my mind while shooting the avenue. “An image of resonance” – this phrase going through my mind all the time. – Tomoki Imai

Imai’s recent photographs maintain a vision consistent with past works- landscapes absent of human presence are alive with the atmosphere of the everyday.
