Daido Moriyama “color + tights”

Dates: Oct 22 – Nov 19, 2016
Location: Taka Ishii Gallery Kitasando

Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present Daido Moriyama’s solo exhibition “color + tights.” This exhibition will feature three silkscreen works from his noted 80s series “How to Create a Beautiful Picture 6: Tights in Shimotakaido” and 12 silkscreen works selected by the artist from his recently produced color series.

Moriyama shot his “How to Create a Beautiful Picture 6: Tights in Shimotakaido” series in the early 1980s, after carrying out self-conscious visual experiments in Farewell to Photography (1972) and Light and Shadow (1982). The mesh pattern featured in this series is a recurring motif in Moriyama’s works. Underlying Moriyama’s photographs are scenes found while walking through the city that create a sense of déjà-vu and memories of formative scenes, which makes the repeated appearance of certain images unavoidable. The mesh pattern in particular shows Moriyama’s obsession for abstracting images into a highly anonymous aggregate.

Moriyama made silkscreen works from 12 images, which he selected from digital photographs he shot of Tokyo. These 12 pieces were exhibited in Art Basel (Switzerland) in June 2016 to great acclaim. Moriyama has noted, “Black and white images feel symbolic and abstract, while color images feel flat, pop, and vulgar.” This exhibition brings together these two divergent trajectories of his practice.

Moriyama will also participate in Taka Ishii Gallery’s inaugural exhibition, scheduled to open on October 21 (Fri) at its new space, complex 665, Roppongi. This exhibition will include Moriyama’s new series “Doll”, which also features the mesh motif.
