Book signing with Hitoshi Tsukiji at Paris Photo

Date: Friday, Nov 11, 2016, from 15:00
Location: Taka Ishii Gallery stand A20 / Paris Photo (Grand Palais, Paris)

Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present Hitoshi Tsukiji’s 15 works from his series, “Vertical, (DOMAIN)” at its stand during Paris Photo. The artist will be signing his latest publication “Shashin (Photograph)” (Nihon Shashin Kikaku, 2015) at our booth on Friday, Nov 11, from 15:00.

Hitoshi Tsukiji was born in 1947 in Kanagawa prefecture and graduated from the Tokyo Junior College of Photography (currently Tokyo Polytechnic University) in 1967. In 1975, he self-published “Vertical, (DOMAIN)” and formed the group, “CAMERA WORKS”, with Ryuichi Kaneko and Shinzo Shimao in 1979. The group was founded to seek new styles of photographic representation and published magazines as a platform for photographers. From his early works to the latest ones, Tsukiji portrays ever-changing cities in a minimalist manner.

Tsukiji’s images have a hard-edged sharpness, betraying a predilection toward clearly defined forms and shapes. His style of photography tends toward the naive, but at the same time his work is highly evocative of the 1970s…quite in keeping with the work commonly seen at this time. This style also evokes Tsukiji’s ideas of what photography meant to him. The photography has a snapshot feel, suggesting that anything can be a subject of photography
